Adequate Sleep

Sleep Better
Ah! The age-old debate about how many hours of sleep are needed. According to National Sleep Foundation’s guidelines, healthy adults need between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per night. In contrast, babies, young children, and teens need even more rest to enable their growth and development. People over 65 should also get 7 to 8 hours per night. One of the best ways to figure out how much sleep our individual body needs is to see how many hours we sleep during a vacation or on the weekend when we don’t need an alarm.
Going too many nights without enough hours of sleep will eventually start affecting our minds and can cause physical issues. Sometimes we stay up too late; sometimes, we have trouble falling or staying asleep. Try some of these for those troubles:
  • Turn off all electronics one hour before bedtime.
  • Read – in bed if you can, so you don’t “rewake” yourself by walking into your bedroom.
  • Stick to a regular nighttime routine to signal the body it is time for sleep.
  • Make a list of things you need to do tomorrow, so your mind doesn’t keep you awake worrying you might forget about any of them!
  • Try rubbing some lavender or chamomile essential oil on the bottoms of your feet, back of your neck, and over your heart to promote calming and relaxation.
  • Take a small dose of melatonin for several nights to see if that helps
